Waterproofing & Rainscreen
The best way to protect the structure, siding, and paint or stain from moisture damage is to design the outer layer of the house as a decorative “rain screen”. This is accomplished by separating the outer cladding from the building’s
water-resistive barrier with an air space.
Hat channels are used in a rain screen system to create a ventilated air gap between the siding and the wall, protecting the building from moisture, rot, and mold. They are typically made of aluminum or galvanized steel and provide a durable, long-lasting alternative to wood furring strips. The “hat” shape creates channels for water to drain away, and the open gaps between the channels promote airflow, which dries the wall cavity.
